Curriculum: What are we learning?

To ensure children gain the skills they need to effectively progress through school and the knowledge they need to be successful learners in the future, we have a bespoke Crowmarsh curriculum.

  • Curriculum Overviews outlining the learning that will take place each term can be found here at the bottom of our class page. These can be useful to instigate discussions at home.
  • Learning in class will be posted here on our class page & sometimes on Instagram

You can find more information about the subjects we teach on Our Curriculum page of the school website.

We also share some of our wider curriculum events on our website link.

Learning at Home

Children spend only 20% of their waking hours in school. So, your support with learning at home is integral to your child’s success.

Reading

We encourage:

  • Reading at home daily (recorded in reading record).
  • Making sure your child has their reading book and reading record in school every day.

Phonics

We used the All Aboard scheme for phonics. It is a crucial KS1 building block. You can read more about Phonics to enable your support at home on our Phonics page.

Spelling Year 2-6

  • From Year 2 upwards, we follow the Babcock Spelling scheme. An age-appropriate spelling list can be found here at the bottom of our class page.

Homework

Year R - 4: At the start of the new term, you will find a Homework Grid here on our class page with a range of tasks/activities. These activities are intended to be done as a family and link to what we are learning in school.

As you complete the home learning, take pictures and/or videos and email them to the class teachers so they can see them and share your achievements.

In Year 2, we will give the children opportunities to share their homework with the class. Please note that this will replace ‘show and tell’.

Our Learning - Summer 1

We had a great time on our visit to Reading Museum.  In the Victorian schoolroom we discovered what it would have been like to go to school in Victorian times, and in the afternoon workshop, we learnt all about the kinds of jobs children did as servants in rich houses.

Our Learning - Spring 2

  WORLD BOOK DAY 2025!

SCIENCE WEEK - Measurement, healthy eating and STEM (programming)

Our Learning - Spring 1

This week we did some Indian food tasting.   We tried pani puri with yogurt, pomegranate and coriander, poppadums and chutneys, samosas, onion bhajis and some Indian milk sweets.  Ask us what we thought of all the different flavours! Thank you to Lily's family for providing the pani puris!

We were also lucky enough to have Arabella's mum come in to talk to us about Chinese New Year, and we made some lovely lanterns.  Ask us what we found out.

Thank you, Stella, for giving up your time to talk to us.

Our Learning - Autumn 2

We had a great trip to the Earth Trust today! With such perfect weather, we took the opportunity to walk to the top of the Clumps to take in the view.  Then the children searched for minibeasts in the woods, the kitchen garden and the pond, and were able to look at some of them up close using microscopes.

In art, we have been creating Autumn pictures using crayons as a wax resist, then painting over our drawings with watercolours.

Our Learning - Autumn 1

In art, we created our own paintbrushes using natural materials then painted with them to see what different marks we could make.

In RE, we have been investigating religion in our local community. We took a walk to the church to ask Rev Kev about his values and how being a Christian impacts his worldview.  We also looked around the church for Christian symbols and artefacts (and even found part of the floor that is 800 years old!)

We had fun making our marmalade sandwiches!  Now we are going to write instructions for how to make them.

In DT, we have been making pouches out of felt.  We had to use running stitch to hold the fabric together. For most of the class, this was their first attempt at sewing and the adults were so impressed with what they achieved - they persevered even though it was a bit fiddly at times!
