✨ Shine by being proud of who we are and what we achieve
Meet the Year 5 Team
Your child’s class teacher is Mrs Corrigan, and they are supported by Mrs Brettell who helps make our classroom a warm and supportive place to learn.
Staying in Touch
Most of our communication is shared via email, so please make sure your contact details—especially your email address—are up-to-date on Arbor.
We're always happy to speak with you in person, but do bear with us at the end of the school day as our priority is making sure every child gets home safely.

Curriculum: What are we learning?
To ensure children gain the skills they need to effectively progress through school and the knowledge they need to be successful learners in the future, we have a bespoke Crowmarsh curriculum.
- Curriculum Overviews outlining the learning that will take place each term can be found here at the bottom of our class page. These can be useful to instigate discussions at home.
- Learning in class will be posted here on our class page & sometimes on Instagram
You can find more information about the subjects we teach on Our Curriculum page of the school website.
We also share some of our wider curriculum events on our website Link
Homework
Children spend only 20% of their waking hours in school. So, your support of learning at home is integral to your child’s success
- Homework should build positive habits, not create stress.
- Little and often is more effective than long tasks.
- Reading remains the foundation at every stage.
- Independence gradually increases as children move through the school.
- Homework consolidates learning rather than introducing new content.
Year 5 - Preparing for upper Key Stage 2 expectations
Weekly structure (approx. 60–75 minutes total)
Reading (15–20 minutes daily)
- Independent reading.
- Discussion about themes, author choices and inference.
Maths (Weekly task)
- Short consolidation task linked to current learning.
SPaG / Spelling (Weekly task)
- Grammar or spelling focus.
- From Year 2 upwards, we follow the Babcock Spelling scheme. An age-appropriate spelling list can be found here at the bottom of our class page
Focus: Organisation, independence and meeting deadlines.
Homework set Friday, due the following Friday.
Year 5 – 6: Children in Year 5 will bring home two short pieces of homework each week. These will be based on the maths and spelling work that we have been doing in school that week. Homework is set on a Friday to be handed in by the following Friday. The importance here is getting into the routine of completing homework and bringing it back to school on time.
Whole School Expectations
- Reading Records in school daily (EYFS–Y4).
- Homework celebrated and acknowledged.
- Support available where needed.
- Consistency of routine valued more than perfection.
Parental Choice and Flexibility
We recognise that family life is busy and that every child’s circumstances are different. Homework at CGPS is designed to support learning and build positive habits; however, we understand that families may not always be able to complete every task.
Reading remains our strongest recommendation, as it underpins all areas of learning. Beyond this, we encourage families to use their professional judgement about what is manageable and beneficial for their child.
If homework is not completed, there will be no sanctions. Our aim is to foster a love of learning, independence and responsibility over time, not to create pressure at home.
If families ever need support, adjustments or guidance, we welcome open communication.
Our learning in Year 5 (Autumn Term 2)
We had a very busy Autumn Term in Year 5 with lots of new learning. We ended the term with a DT project where we made Christmas tree decorations. In order to do this we had to design our star decoration and then cut the felt. We then sewed a smaller star onto a larger star using running stitch and added a button for decoration. We then used blanket stitch to attach the two larger stars and we stuffed the decoration. Finally we added ribbon to hang the star up with. We were very pleased with our decorations!

Our learning in Year 5 (Autumn Term 1)

In science, we have been learning about mixtures and separation. We have explored the difference between a mixture and a solution as well as investigating how we can separate mixtures using sieving, filtering, dissolving and evaporating.

In DT, we have made Doodlers! We had to make a working electrical circuit which we attached to a paper cup. We then created a design on the cup, attached the electrics and 4 pens as legs. Once switched on, the Doodler wobbled drawing a scribble pattern on paper. After this, we made DIY instruction mannuals for the product.

We recently visited Milestones Musuem in Basingstoke to support our History topic about World War 2. At Milestones, we learnt more about which foods were or were not rationed and we explored what an evacuee would have packed in their suitcase. We also learnt how to spot a German bomber plane, the role of an ARP and how to give basic first aid to someone who had been injured during the war. We had a brilliant day!
